Spreading the Word

For years, Quaker House has run a tiny classified ad in the Fort Bragg post newspaper, The Paraglide, to let folks there know about the GI Rights Hotline and our counseling. I've long doubted whether the ad is worth it; it's tiny, and seems lost in the pages of bigger, splashier ads for cars and boats and guns. I've often wondered if some other media might perform better.

Now we're going to find out.

After talking with other local peace folks, we all decided to rent billboards around Fort Bragg, to bear the message of the Bring Them Home Now campaign and the GI Rights Hotline.

The first one went up  in early October, 2003, and every month or so, the image has moved to a different location, all near a major gate to Fort Bragg. Its evoked some comment, but surprisingly little criticism -- enthusiasm for this war is waning, even here. The billboard rent costs about $600 per month, and we're all chipping in. We'll keep them up as long as we can. (And how about putting one up in your community?)
